A Successful Community Planting Day at the Gunning Showground Bush Block Featured

On Saturday, 28th September, the Gunning Showground Bush Block was a hive of activity as volunteers from Gunning District Landcare (GDL) and the Onerwal Local Aboriginal Land Council came together for a very special community planting day. With 24 enthusiastic volunteers, we were able to plant nearly 900 native grasses and flowers in the central area of the park, near the yarning circle.

The day was a beautiful example of community action at its best. Volunteers connected over caring for Country and enhancing a space that everyone in the community can enjoy. A special highlight of the day was the boundless energy and enthusiasm of the children who participated. Their drive and effort was infectious, reminding us all how important it is to involve younger generations in caring for the land.

This planting day was an important part of our ongoing works at the Gunning Showground, where as part of a Stronger Country Communities Fund project, GDL has been building an ecological bushland park, complete with a yarning circle, park benches, and wheelchair accessible paths. Consisting of Box Gum Grassy Woodland, a critically endangered ecological community, this bush block not only benefits local wildlife but also provides a peaceful, natural community space perfect for coming together and connecting with nature.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated, whether you were planting, sharing stories, or offering support in other ways. We look forward to seeing these plants grow and flourish over the coming years. Keep an eye out for future activities, and feel free to drop by the Showground Bush Block to see the beautiful progress we’ve made!

This event was supported in part by Acciona, who funded lunch and refreshments, keeping everyone well-fed and motivated throughout the day. This activity was also made possible by the NSW Landcare Enabling Program, a collaboration between Local Land Services and Landcare NSW supported by the NSW Government.
