Gunning District Landcare is proud to protect one of NSW’s last strongholds of the Southern Pygmy Perch — a tiny, charismatic native fish threatened by predators like redfin perch, habitat loss, and drought.
Since 2018, we’ve worked with local landholders and partners to establish predator-free refuge dams, restore creek habitats, monitor water quality, and raise community awareness. Supported by NSW DPI Fisheries, Upper Lachlan Shire Council, scientists from the University of Canberra and OzFish, our program also created one of the first local Action Plans for Southern Pygmy Perch recovery.
