Our third seminar in the Landcare Seminar Series was held in Breadalbane and drew a fantastic turnout, bringing together landholders, gardeners and community members keen to learn more about biodiversity and ecosystem health. We were delighted to partner with our friends at Goulburn Mulwaree Landcare Landscapes, with Ray Shiel joining us as our knowledgeable and engaging presenter.
Ray guided the group through the core elements that support healthy ecosystems, from soils to the water cycle. A major focus of the evening was what lies beneath our feet. Participants learned about the remarkable diversity of life in soil and the complex relationships between bacteria, fungi, other microorganisms and plants. These underground networks play a critical role in nutrient cycling, water retention and plant resilience, forming the foundation of healthy landscapes.
The seminar explored how everyday land management decisions, whether on farms or in backyards, can either support or disrupt these natural processes. By working with nature and protecting soil life, land managers can improve productivity while also strengthening biodiversity and ecosystem function.
The evening was as much about connection as it was about learning. Participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share experiences and take ideas home to apply in their own landscapes. Everyone also went home with some locally grown plants to continue supporting biodiversity in their own patch.
Ray also shared a written overview titled “What is Biodiversity,” touching on the soil food web, natural cycles, the role of biodiversity in climate stability, and suggested readings for anyone wanting to explore the topic further. You can view that at the link below.
