Between 2022 and 2024, Gunning District Landcare ran three successful rounds of the Paddock Tree Project, helping landholders across the region plant more than 1,000 scattered paddock trees.
Inspired by other Paddock Tree Projects in the region – Yass Landcare and Hovell’s Creek Landcare, GDL received funding in 2022 initially from Local Land Services, and later by the Biala Wind Farm Community Grant in 2023 and 2024. As part of the projects, landholders received native tubestock, weed mats, and sturdy steel mesh guards. Community working bees were held to help cut up the heavy mesh, load materials, and share planting tips. Participants contributed to material costs and committed to protecting the young trees into the future.
These projects have strengthened farm productivity, improved biodiversity corridors, and ensured the next generation of paddock trees is growing strong.
