In October, more than 20 bird species were recorded at the Gunning Showground Bushland Park during the Great Southern BioBlitz. On Christmas Day, community members carried out another bird survey and recorded 18 species in only 90 minutes!
Across just these two surveys, 28 bird species were recorded at the Bushland Park in 2025. It’s a remarkable number for a relatively small patch of woodland right in the middle of town, and a strong reminder of how important this area is as habitat for our native wildlife.

This isn’t a complete list, just a snapshot based on a couple of surveys. As more observations are made throughout the years, the number will likely continue to grow!
Seeing this range of birds using the site highlights the value of protecting and caring for this patch of endangered Box Gum Grassy Woodland. It provides food, shelter, and nesting opportunities for a wide variety of species.
